Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him,
he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
-- Matthew 8 verse 18 (Kings James Bible)
It is very interesting to note that Jesus saw the great
number of people drawn to His ministry. What is even
more interesting is that He knew everyone round about
Him was not necessarily following for His righteousness.
Although many received healing, there were also great
multitudes following for their own advantages too. The
sights and sounds of these miracles just fascinated
crowd dwellers and spectators. Even critics were
captivated.
Many no doubt had good intentions, but were simply
unprepared for the journey and the work involved. This
is evident in the conversations he had with the two
individuals that approached Him about following. In the
end, only His disciples followed and entered with Him
into that ship.
Today, the realities concerning the multitudes round
about the faith of Jesus Christ are much the same.
Numbers are unreliable indicators to use when
assessing a ministry. For Christ was often present at
various places on the behalf of one or just a few.
May God’s Word resonate in your spirit each day.

- Background notes: The two who approached Him wanting to
follow, but not prepared as to the responsibilities and
commitment required. Review Matthew 8 verses 19-23.
19. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will
follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the
birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to
lay his head.
21. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me
first to go and bury my father.
22. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury
their dead.
23. And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed
him.
